SHILLONG: The State Government is committed to addressing the prevailing disparities in development, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inaugural function of Mawpat C&RD Block, Sangma said several initiatives have been rolled out to bridge the gap but they have not been fully materialised to achieve the desired outcomes.
He, however, added that the government has re-strategised its approach to strengthen its various arms to reach out to the targeted groups.
Terming C&RD blocks as epicenters through which all schemes and programmes are initiated, Sangma added that the creation of Mawpat block will also help in decongesting Shillong as people living in that jurisdiction do not have to travel all the way to Mylliem for official works.
The chief minister said locals would not be alienated from their land but co-operation is needed for peaceful implementation of schemes.
According to Sangma, there is a need to take care of the interests of the youth and create opportunities for education and livelihood to check migration.
Mawpat, which is the 45th block carved out of Mylliem C&RD Block, will cover three assembly constituencies and it will be easier for block officials to function. People will have more access to developmental programmes in a systematic manner.
The Mawpat Dorbar has donated land for free at Mawpat Pyllun for establishment of the permanent block campus.
The Chief Minister also released work order worth Rs 25 lakh.
C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh, and MLAs AL Hek, Jemino Mawthoh and David Nongrum, were among the guests present in Mawpat on Tuesday.
