SHILLONG: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to GNLA chairman Champion Sangma over a bail application moved by his counsel for the pending Pynursla case.
Supreme Court lawyer and counsel for the state government Ranjan Mukherjee said over phone on Tuesday that more than 22 cases are pending against Champion out of which he is yet to secure bail in four cases.
On Monday, the bail application was taken up in relation to the Pynursla case that was charge-sheeted under various sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.
Earlier on February 15 this year, the lower court had allowed the bail application of Champion against which the State Government favoured a revision petition in the High Court of Meghalaya which, however, was termed as not maintainable by the court.
Later, the revision petition was withdrawn and an application was filed in the High Court challenging the bail granted by the lower court.
During the hearing of the case in May this year, the High Court refused to cancel the bail granted to Champion by the lower court.
The High Court viewed that even if the bail is granted in the Pynursla case, he continues to be in jail for other cases.
This prompted the government to file a petition in the Supreme Court.
When the matter came up for hearing in the Apex Court on Monday, the submission Mukherjee, the government counsel, was that once Champion goes on getting bail based on the order of the High Court, he would walk out free and may disappear into the neighbouring country.
Following this, the Supreme Court issued notice to Champion.
Champion was arrested on July 30, 2012, from an area under Pynursla on the Indo-Bangladesh border.
