Parental care stressed in drug awareness meet
SHILLONG: A city-based women’s group -‘Ekta Mahila Samiti’ organised a ”Mothers’ Awareness Programme” at Nongsohpoh (Naspatighari) here on Monday. The aim was to create awareness among the parents about how youths are addicted to drugs, and alcoholism. It was held in collaboration with Upper Mawprem Rangbah Shnong, the city police, a mother’s group and woman commission attended by local MLA Paul Lyngdoh and residents of the locality.
Lyngdoh pointed out that drug and alcoholism are the major factors that could disturb peace and happiness of not just the affected families but the society at large. He assured the Mahila Samiti help in fighting these negative forces with the support of the Rangbah Shnong and the police.The officer in-charge of Sadar police station said to eradicate drug abuse, concerted efforts are needed besides perseverance. The police extended support to Mahila Samiti to work together to control drug abuse, drug peddling, and human trafficking. The women’s group reiterated that keeping in view the current situation in the society, “parental and media responsibilities are higher now than before”.

Social organisation wants govt to implement Land Transfer Act
SHILLONG: The Social Organisation of Meghalaya Against Land Alienation (SOMALA) questioned Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on the demographic changes in Meghalaya arising out of the non-implementation of Meghalaya Transfer of Land Regulation Act 1979 in letter and spirit. In a statement issued here on Thursday, W. Anthony, convener of SOMALA asserted that they have time and again reminded the state government to implement the land Transfer Act but the request has fallen on deaf ears. Stating that there are few months left for the election, the organisation expects the CM to implement the Act in letter and spirit to show his concern for change in demographic structure.

Dorbar Shnong rejects decision taken by organisation
SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong of Nongsder, Ri Bhoi has objected to the decision of an organisation called Preservation of Fishes Wah Synrem (Synrem river) restricting people from washing their clothes at Wah Synrem, Nongsder. The local Dorbar said, “Wah Synrem falls under the jurisdiction of the Dorbar Shnong Nongsder and an order from the Shnong forbidding killing of fish was issued way back in 1989. The Dorbar Shnong does not recognize the organisation”.

Garo students clear London based music exam
TURA: Six Garo aspiring musicians belonging to the Bosco Academy of Music, Tura have cleared the music theory examination conducted by Trinity College of Music, London. Aran Sasan R Marak and Christine Amachi M Sangma who took the grade 2 theory examination passed with distinction while Mibande Ch Marak (grade 1), Tomtom Salgrik G Momin (grade 3) and John Breacken Hill M Marak (grade 3) passed on merit. Another student, Trady Singkam D Shira (grade 5) also managed to clear the examination. . The results were declared on Wednesday. All six students studied under the supervision of Academy Director, Tengrang R Sangma. The academy lauded the success of its students and wished them the best in their future endeavours.

ASHA workers to cease work until pending dues paid
TURA: Urban ASHA Workers have announced to cease work as well as to stop submitting their respective reports in protest against the concerned authority’s failure to clear their pending dues.In a statement issued here on Thursday, the workers under the banner of the All Urban ASHA Association informed that they are yet to get their monthly honorarium since the month of March including other dues like immunisation money, MMBS money etc. “Don’t we also have families? How are we supposed to feed our families or pay for our children’s school expenses? We will not work unless our pending dues are paid,” the workers said.

NGO expresses concern over deplorable condition of NH-62
SHILLONG: The All Achik Youth Federation has petitioned the Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma expressing its resentment over the deplorable condition of National Highway 62 . In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the NGO said that the road is dusty, rough, uneven and risky despite the fact that people of several villages are dependent on that particular road for their day-to-day activities. The NGO further added that the people of different villages have to run from pillar to post demanding black topping of the road but the request have fallen on deaf ears. Meanwhile, the NGO is also crying out over the frequent power cuts in Baghmara district saying power remains cut off for months and it has adversely affected the lives of people living in different villages of South Garo Hills district.

One killed in accident
SHILLONG: On July 13, a truck driver died on the spot while others sustained injuries when the cement laden vehicle (ML-04-9761) driven by Md. Dilwar Hussain Borbhuiya dashed against two trucks (AP-16TH-9677 & AS-01GC-6624) at Chiehruphi village in East Jaintia Hills. Md. Dilwar Hussain Borbhuiya died on the spot, while the drivers and helpers of the other trucks sustained injuries.
