City lady donates body, eyes to hospitals

SHILLONG: Anita Das will live forever in the memories of her dear ones as well as some strangers.
The 88-year-old woman passed away on Friday morning and as her last wish, Das’s family donated her body to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGHRIHMS) and eyes to Shankardev Nethralaya in Guwahati.
Dr Ashim Das, former Director of Health Services, said two years ago, her mother told him that she wanted the family to donate her body after her death.
Her other children, who stay outside Shillong, also agreed to this. “My mom used to tell us that we will not take anything from here after death and we have to give back what we got here in this world,” Ashim told The Shillong Times on Friday.
The family could not donate her eyes in Shillong because there is no eye preservation facility here.
