SHILLONG: A couple has been arrested from a government quarter in the city for illegally selling liquor.
Sadar police raided a quarter inside the PWD complex near Barik Point late on Friday night after they received information about the illegal sale of Indian-made foreign liquor.
The arrested duo, identified as Bhalang Lamare (45) and Phatik Deka (57), was caught red-handed.
Police recovered 2,315 ml of liquor.
According to police, Deka works as a roller engine driver in PWD and they were allegedly misusing State Government property.
Even senior police officers were surprised at the flourishing liquor business inside the government quarter.
A case under the Meghalaya Police Act is being taken up by the police where a fine of Rs 5000 each will be levied by the court if the accused are proven guilty.
The Sadar police in the past had cracked down on liquor sale at Keating Road in the city.
They had also arrested a woman.
“With her arrest on three occasions, illegal liquor business has completely stopped in the area,” police said and requested the public to share information about such illegal businesses.
