Football tourney to celebrate India’s independence from Aug 4

TURA: Freedom Challenged Cup, a football tournament to celebrate India’s independence and remember its brave freedom fighters will kick off on Friday here at the Chandamry Playground in Tura.

The event was conceptualised last year by William Initiative, a Tura-based organization to spread the message of national integration and the same is being supported by the West Garo Hills District Administration under the flagship programme of Chief Minister’s Youth for Green, Chief Minister’s Youth Development Fund and the Swacch Bharat Mission.

During the tournament a total of 22 teams will participate in the football tournament and another 16 teams in the under-12 Futsal Championships.

Speaking to reporters at the event venue Secretary of William Initiative, Gino Sangma said that the event was an initiative to propagate understanding amongst the participants as well as the audience to understand the importance and history of India’s freedom struggle.

As part of the Freedom Fest, the under – 15 tournament titled – Bhaichung Bhutia Champions Cup 2017 is also being held at the same venue from August 5, the finals of which is likely to be attended by the legendary footballer himself.

“This is for the first time that the Bhaichung Bhutia Champions Cup is being held anywhere in the North East and we are very upbeat with the support extended by the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, New Delhi, who has assured to provide all logistics to start the academy in Tura,” Sangma said.
