SHILLONG: The Army has decided to change the location of its biannual recruitment rally from next year following complaints of congestion in certain localities in the city.
The recruitment rally will be conducted in Happy Valley from next year, sources said.
The thousands of job aspirants who came from different parts of the North East for the recent rally by 119TA were reportedly creating problems for many local residents.
Residents of Bishnupur had also complained of having a harrowing time as army candidates were crowding the locality.
According to them, the entire road was blocked by the candidates for the last two days and it was difficult for people and vehicles to pass.
The CSWO has also suggested that the Army authorities should provide entry to candidates at least at night, who come from far places. Several candidates, who had taken shelter in a city guest house, were allegedly chased out and many of them were seen sleeping on footpaths.
Meanhwile Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) also has demanded action against the South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai for allegedly manhandling a woman.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing, while strongly condemning Shullai for allegedly manhandling Haviva Passah, also denounced the legislator for “kicking and throwing out” the non-tribal candidates belonging to the neighbouring states from a guest house.
“Such inhuman acts by a sitting legislator are unexpected and shall not be tolerated in a civilized society.”
“The authorities should take stern action against the MLA as per the law of the land, so as to also deter others in power from committing such acts in future, as the law is expected to be equal for everyone, irrespective of power or status,” Kharshiing said. CSWO also suggested that the Army should provide at least entry to candidates who come from far into their area, for the night. The organisation said that the Army called thousands of candidates in a day and that was it was difficult to accommodate them in civil areas. “The campus should be made accessible with proper toilets for such large recruitment drives on humanitarian grounds,” Kharshiing said.
