Vigil mounted in Assam in run up to  I-Day celebrations

GUWAHATI: Security has been tightened all over Assam where Independence Day is being celebrated with a three-day programme as per the direction of Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal.

The state police Director General Mukesh Sahay informed media that though there was no specific threat from any quarters in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations, there has not been any laxity in the security arrangements all over the state especially in and around the venues for official celebrations of the Independence Day.

The area within in two kilometer radius of Veterinary College playground at Khanapara where the Central celebrations of I-day will be held, has been sanitised and put under round the clock surveillance.

Meanwhile, the Special DG (law and order) of Assam Police and ADGP (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharyya on Tuesday held a security review meeting in Jorhat with district police officials as well as CPRF officials. The senior police officials also inspected the parade ground in Jorhat.

The police and Army have launched intensified operation in areas close to inter-district boundary of Nagaon and Karbi Anglong against militants in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations.
