Shillong: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Saturday urged villagers of Sohiong to go for large-scale farming of livestock and poultry for higher profit margins.
Addressing a gathering at an awareness programme, the minister said this area is suitable for livestock and poultry rearing and emphasised on the ready availability of market for livestock products as Meghalaya depends largely on other states for supply of raw meat and poultry products.
The Government has recently launched Livestock Mission with an aim to create livelihood opportunities for rural farmers.
The programme on Saturday was organised by the office of the East Khasi Hills District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer in collaboration with the BDO office in Sohiong C&RD Block.
Among other dignitaries present at the event were Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar and Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary B. Rijal.
