Waste management in the Shillong Urban agglomeration is currently being handled by multiple public agencies including traditional local institutions. To bring about a coordinated effort and to streamline the management of waste, the State Government has constituted a Supervisory Committee headed by the Chief Secretary with members from all stakeholders, to actively monitor, improve and maintain the cleanliness in the city, which is in line with the Court intervention.
The Online portal (http://cleanshillong.nic.in) was being launched to enable all stakeholders, to better handle the waste management in Shillong, and also to enable the citizens to actively participate in the process of cleaning up the city. The portal has a provision to file online complaints so that prompt and necessary action can be taken.
Hackathon was also simultaneously launched on Wednesday, with the theme of making Shillong a Clean and Liveable City. Ideas and corresponding solutions are being solicited from interested citizens, to resolve the given problem statements as submitted by the various departments/agencies. Citizens may register as a team in the cleanshillong.nic.in portal. The ideas will then be evaluated by a multidisciplinary jury, and will be adjudged according to creativity, practicality, social impact, innovation and tools for developing the product/prototype.
