GNLA assaults 5 for ‘cop links’

NONGSTOIN: Residents of Dymmit are living in a state of fear after cadres of the Garo National Liberation Army reportedly assaulted five persons suspecting them to be police collaborators, in the village on Thursday.
Sources said some of the villagers have even fled and taken refuge elsewhere in the apprehension that the militants might again assault or even execute them.
Dymmit, which is only 4km from NH 44E (Shillong – Tura Road), is believed to be a “gateway” for the outfit.
“The villagers feel insecure in the village especially during night time as there was no police personnel to guard them. The police are on duty only during the day and return once it gets dark,” a source said.
Worse still, an anti-dacoit camp set up in the area earlier, no longer exists.
Telephone calls made by this correspondent to West Khasi Hills superintendent of police GD Kharwanlang in this regard went unanswered.
