SHILLONG: The East Garo Hills district committee president has been accused of indulging in anti-party activities and planning to challenge the authority of Minister Deborah Marak, who represents Williamnagar constituency.
A delegation of 17 District Congress Committee (DCC) workers met Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday to complain against Sengbath R. Marak.
DCC general secretary Helpingson G. Momin told The Shillong Times, that Sengbath forced party functionaries — Clebereth Ch. Marak, Luckyact Momin and Livingstone Marak — to sign a false report against Deborah.
“He should not have done this. Madam (Deborah) has been leading the party for the last 20 years and people are satisfied under her guidance as she is working for the people,” Helpingson said.
“When Madam is trying to do all this, Sengbath is trying to disrupt the activities with false statement. Madam should be our MLA whereas Sengbath is not satisfied with her,” he added.
In a letter to AICC President Sonia Gandhi, Clebereth, Luckyact and Livingstone claimed that Sengbath wanted to contest against Deborah and he was seeking their support to which they declined.
On the other hand, ardent supporters and grassroots workers from East Garo Hills — including members of women’s and youth wings — have written to Gandhi, AICC general secretary in charge of Meghalaya, CP Joshi, in charge Meghalaya, and Secretary in charge, Vijay Laxmi Sadho.
The signatories to the letter stated that Sengbath has been indulging in serious anti-party activities and is openly canvassing against the party and Deborah.
“Sengbath R. Marak has been spreading rumours against the sub-BCC members created by BCC and stating that there is no future for the Congress or Deborah Marak in the upcoming elections of the state in 2018,” the signatories stated, adding, “… and they should support him as he has links with influential politicians with connections with the central government besides instigating them with similar anti-party activities.”
The supporters felt the need to report the matter as the state and the constituency is gearing up for the 2018 Assembly elections.
They observed that anti-party activities and wrongly influencing voters will have serious ramifications in the ensuing elections.
