TURA: Former Rajya Sabha MP, Thomas A Sangma on Thursday said that knowledge of science, mathematics and technology was essential for students in this age of computers.
Sangma was speaking as the chief guest during inauguration of the Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition held at St Xavier’s Secondary School in Tura.
Sangma compared science and mathematics to bread and butter without which he said that students would not be able to survive as everyone was dependent on technology in today’s world. Stating that the future belongs to students, Sangma said that the key to becoming successful was have a goal in life.
Speaking on the problem of unemployment among the youths, Sangma said that the education department should come up with new policies as mere college degrees were not enough for one to get a suitable job today. He said that skills need to be taught in schools and programmes like science exhibitions should be organized more frequently.
Later, the chief guest also inspected the exhibits put up by students after throwing the exhibition open.
Earlier, guest of honour, Kerobina A Sangma, District Science Supervisor, West Garo Hills Division highlighted the importance of education and urged the students to strive to become role models among their peers.
Among others present on the occasion were Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School Principal, Audrey R Marak, St Xaviers’ Secondary School Headmistress, Sr Maria D’Silva, members of the school managing committee and staff.
