SHILLONG: The general meeting of the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA), South West Khasi Hills District Unit was held at Women’s Hostel of Sngap Syiem College Mawkyrwat on August 19.
The meeting was presided over by Unit president D. Lyngdoh.
Several state-level leaders including the organising cum publicity secretary E. G. War, general secretary R. R. Ronghang and president K. Shadap attended the meeting.
The leaders gave brief report regarding the functional and agitational programme of the MUPSTA for the last four years till date.
E.G. War said that the MUPSTA had been continuously fighting for the enhancement of the teacher’s salary since the year 1994 and continuing till date.
“The association had conducted a hunger strike for two and a half months at the student’s field, Jaiaw in 2002, however, the government then took notice of the agitation and enhanced the salary to Rs.3000 for the 462 schools,” War said.
The general secretary Ronghang said that the teachers should co-operate with the association whenever any programme is conducted in Shillong. He also called upon the teachers, who did not understand the objectives of the MUPSTA to come forward and join hands to strengthen the association.
The president K. Shadap said that out of 3284 teachers in the State, only 350 regularly attended the agitational programme in Shillong.
“Most of the teachers just stay at home and make a call on the mobile to ask about the enhancement,” Shadap said.
He further added that it was the JACATAM which agitated for the enhancement of the salary of Adhoc teachers.
Shadap urged the government to fulfill their demands while reminding that JACATAM had put on hold the demand for provincialisation for the benefit of all the Adhoc schools.
