Single window clearance to expand tea factories
Tura: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul M. Sangma informed a single-window clearance has been given recently through the department of Commerce & Industries for expansion of tea factories in the State in order to address the problems of the tea growers due to surplus in supply of fresh tea leaves. The chief minister was addressing a gathering of tea growers under the banner of West Garo Hills Tea Farmers’ Federation and other farmers on Tuesday. Encouraging the tea farmers, the chief minister stressed on the need to generate demand for their products not only within the region but also outside with multiple and innovative ideas. He said that the state would go for organic certification of tea grown in the region under Mission Organic. Towards this end, the department has formulated a scheme to improve the quality of tea training would be given to tea farmers for making natural fertilizers and natural pesticides by using locally available resources, he informed.

DC issues directives to depts on road safety
TURA: In compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi has issued directives and advisories to all departments and stakeholders for road safety measures as per the Action Plan prepared by the Transport Department on Road Safety and Security for the welfare of the pedestrians and commuters as well as general public. The District School Education Officer (DSEO) and District Mission Coordinator in charge SSA and Principals of all schools and colleges are directed to constitute committee members in their respective schools and college and organize quiz, debates, street plays and flash mobs both at the school and college level. A 365-day safety campaign would be launched along with workshop for taxi operators and drivers will also be organised. The District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) and Superintendent, Tura Civil Hospital has been instructed to follow the guidelines of Good Samaritan which was issued by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways.

NPP Youth Wing raises Rambrai devp issue
NONGSTOIN: The NPP Youth Wing Rambrai Block on Tuesday met the District Health and Medical Officer and the Executive Engineer PWD (R) of West Khasi Hills District to discuss the issue of the problems related to health care and conditions of pathetic roads in Rambrai-Jyrngam Constituency. Dona Lyngkhoi, Publicity Secretary NPP Youth Wing, Rambrai-Jyrngam Block told Pressmen that the youth wing had asked the government to set up a PHC at Langpih and Mawkhiat and a Sub Centre at Nongriat. They also urged the authorities to upgrade the health centres at Rambrai, Nonglang and Kyrshai.The Youth Wing also met the Executive Engineer PWD (R) at Nongstoin to highlight the pathetic condition of the Nongstoin-Rambrai road. The EE also said that progressive survey of the NH Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai-Chaygoan is nearing completion.

Appointment of Nongpoh BJP president opposed
Nongpoh: All is not well in the camp of Nongpoh BJP Mandal as party workers are opposing against the District BJP leaders for appointing a new president without consulting BJP leaders from Nongpoh Mandal. This came to light after leaders of District BJP headed by B.B Makdoh as the President appointed Anthony Kharnaior as the new President on August 25 at Umsning. Party workers from Nongpoh led by Silent Star Rane as the president strongly opposed the dictator rules of District BJP President of Ri Bhoi District. Ranee said that the appointment is a direct violation of the party constitution and urged for immediate intervention of the State BJP leaders.

Timber smuggling
SHILLONG: Moonlight P Mara, Range Forest Officer, Mahendraganj Range, GHADC lodged a complaint that on August 25 around 4 am, Forest field staff detected one timber-laden Mahindra Pick-up (ML-08-2208) near Katuli Bazar in South West Garo Hills and signaled the vehicle to stop for checking. However, the driver sped away with an intention to harm the Forest staff on duty. Later, it was ascertained that the vehicle belongs to one Anna Islam, allegedly a timber mafia of Jhonjhoni, Assam.

BSF seizes 85 cattle
SHILLONG: The disturbing trend of cattle smuggling to Bangladesh continues at Lyngkhat, East Khasi Hills district ahead of ‘Eid-ul-Azha’ when the prices/demand of bovine animals are its peak. The BSF troops deployed at Lyngkhat foiled an attempt to smuggle 54 cattle worth more than Rs 10.5 lakh to Bangladesh. On intervening night of August 28-29, BSF troops deployed at Nayabazar, East Khasi Hills district launched a special operation and prevented 20 cattles from being smuggled. ‘BSF will conduct a special joint operation with the police in the run-up to Eid-ul-Azha,’ said Sh. U K Nayal, DIG/PRO BSF. In another incident, troops deployed at Tuka, in East Khasi Hills seized 11 cattle worth more than Rs 4 lakh.
