SHILLONG: In what can be termed sheer negligence, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), which looks after maintenance of Umiam hydro-electric dam, is yet to repair the broken pavement along the dam.
It was on July 5 that the broken pavement along a stretch of National Highway 6 on the dam, which connects Shillong with rest of the country, first came to light. The media have also highlighted the matter.
However, almost two months has elapsed but the MeECL is yet to wake up to the danger such a situation might pose. Several vehicles, either from the city, or from Guwahati, pass through the stretch every day.
Concerns have been raised, time and again, about the safety of the dam, but apparently, the corporation has been looking the other way.
Last time, fears were allayed by the authorities saying only the pavement along the highway on the dam was damaged after two night buses met with an accident on the spot.
A visit to the dam also revealed that the stretch has too many potholes and there has been no repair since October 2012.
Attempts were made to contact the MeECL officials for a response on the damaged pavement and the dilapidated road over the dam. However, they could not be contacted.
