TURA: Senior citizens from Tura have decided to seek land from the government for the construction of an old age home in the Town.

The decision was taken in a meeting held recently by Tura Garo Senior Citizens Forum (TGSCF) at the conference hall of the Council of Nokmas in the town. The forum proposed that the unutilised building in the name of Officers’ Club at Goanang locality, opposite Home Guard and Civil Defence Office which currently is not under the care of any department, should be given for the purpose.

Other issues were also discussed during the meeting like the demand being made in Khasi and Jaintia hills for raising the age limit for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates for MPSC examinations from the current 32 to 40 years, which the forum has supported.

Another issue discussed by the forum included the problem of noise pollution in Tura Bazar area. The forum felt that songs or chantings which are confined to a particular place of worship or event venue is acceptable. However, it urged concerned authorities to take measures to check the use of loud speakers during occasions so that peace and serenity of surrounding areas in the town is not disturbed.
