SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday dissolved the Block unit in Pynursla constituency, which is represented by senior Congress legislator Prestone Tynsong.
Earlier, MPPC had already dissolved block Congress committees in Mawkyrwat, Nartiang and Umroi Assembly constituencies, represented by Congress MLAs Rowell Lyngdoh, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Ngaitlang Dhar, respectively.
According to sources, MPCC wanted to remove all the close aides of Tynsong who are leading the block units at present. There is an attempt by MPCC to rope in new faces into the party.
The party appointed H. Khongthani as the new president of the block Congress and asked him to submit the list of other members.
Curiously, majority of the new faces whom the MPCC is planning to induct as members of the new BCC were supporters of the regional parties in the past.
Sources further revealed that the MPCC has made this move with indications that Tynsong is planning to leave the party and would contest the upcoming 2018 Assembly elections from another party.
Another reason for the sudden action on the part of the Congress is that its MDC from Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh, Jansing M Tynsong who is close to Prestone, extended support to PDF led by suspended Congress legislator and KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem.
Meanwhile, the ruling Congress in Meghalaya in all likelihood will know from September 15, who from among its sitting legislators will still want to contest on Congress ticket in the upcoming Assembly election to be held in February-March next year.
The Congress has started distributing application forms to aspirants for party ticket for the 2018 Assembly polls from all the 60 constituencies, from August 31.
The ruling party’s move to distribute application forms early came at a time when reports suggested that some sitting Congress legislators will leave the party and seek re-election from other political parties from their respective constituencies.
The distribution of forms has been fixed from August 31 to September 15.
“Aspirants for Congress ticket will collect the forms
and submit the same through their respective block Congress committees by October 4,” a Congress leader said.
After receiving the application forms, the block Congress committees would forward the application to the District Congress Committees.
“The same would be forwarded to MPCC by November 22 and we expect that the entire process should complete within November,” he said.
