SHILLONG/TURA: The executive member in charge of land and revenue in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has issued a showcause notice to Enilla Ch Narak, Nokma of Danakgre A’king.
The noticed issued on September 5 asks Enilla to explain why her nokmaship should not be cancelled and legal action be initiated against her for misusing her office of Nokma through Bernard Marak by abetting criminal offences.
Meanwhile, the Council of Nokmas on Friday also petitioned the West Garo Hills deputy commissioner informing him about their decision on the alleged unlawful activities of Bernard and Enilla.
On reports that Bernard had demanded fines from residents who did not attend his meeting on August 17, the Council is of the opinion that such activities are illegal, unlawful and highly objectionable and condemnable.
Both Enilla and Bernard had earlier claimed that the latter was running the office of Nokma with the former’s permission.
To this, the council pointed out that the Garo customary laws do not allow the Nokma to take decisions alone on such an important matter.
“She has to consult the chras and the mahari and only then can any action be taken. However, even then the person appointed must be a member of her clan or sub-clan,” it said.
The petition while referring to the reports that activities of Marak has created a sense of security, the council has considered it to be a breach of peace and demanded that the person should be brought to book.
The council also expressed concern over the recent trend among people in using Nokma institution for self-interest.
