JOWAI: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma could not attend the silver jubilee programme of the Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills, due to bad weather on Wednesday.
He did not reach the district as his chopper could not fly.
Sangma was supposed to attend as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the year-long silver jubilee celebration of the college.
The District Administration and the District Police kept waiting at the helipad since 10 am till 3:30 pm and left the landing ground only after the confirmation call was received from the chief minister’s office.
The programme finally kicked off at 3:30 pm after the delay of four and a half hours with Power and Community Rural Development Minister, Coming One Ymbon and Member of Parliament, Vincent H Pala as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
The closing ceremony of the celebration was also attended by Congress MDCs including the Deputy Chief Executive Member, Andrew Shullai, Local MDC Violet Lyngdoh and MLA of Sutnga, Hopeful Bamon besides other District heads including the Deputy Commissioner, and Superintendent of Police.
Hundreds of students, parents and government officials among others also witnessed the function.
Speaking at the celebration, Ymbon congratulated the college and wished the students success in life.
Pala informed that only 2 per cent of the colleges in India is run by the government and the rest 98 per cent is run by the Missions, societies, group of people and also by individuals.
He called upon all the students to work hard and also the parents to work hand in hand with the college authority.
Earlier, the College Principal, Dr. Phervision Nongtdu informed that the college started way back in 1992 and had produced many important persons in the society serving in various fields be it in the government or in private sectors.
He informed that the college has received funds from the RUSA and UGC to support students from poor family.
The college was accredited as Grade B College by the NAAC recently.
Local MLA, Justine Dkhar chaired the meeting and Dr. David Diengdoh also spoke.
