SHILLONG/TURA: The alumni of St Edmund’s School from Shillong and Garo Hills
mourned
the demise of their long time mentor and retired vice principal of St Edmund’s School, Brother Peter Gomes who passed away in Goa on Saturday. He was 94.
His funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at St. Francis Xavier church, in Goa.
Born on July 25, 1923, Oreson Peter Gomes after his studies joined the railways for three years
He joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1948 and worked in different schools run by the congregation and spent 32 years in St. Edmunds teaching the students mathematics and science.
Br. Gomes was a chum of the young ones in school and a disciplinarian for the slightly older, yet equally loved by both.
Headmaster of Sherwood school in Tura, Tyrone D’brass who was associated with St. Edmund’s in 1985 while working as a teacher in the school recalled with fondness his moments with the late Brother Gomes.
“He was simplicity personified. He stuck to his job with passion and delivered in detail. A kind human being he will be missed by all,” said Mr D’brass.
One of his former students and a successful author and novelist from Assam, Ankush Saikia while speaking to The Shillong Times said, “He was the one who gave every student he came across an interest in astronomy.”
Br. Gomes, would also walk around different localities of Shillong and visit families who needed his support physically and spiritually.
He was a man of prayer and dedicated his life for the people especially the poor.
Br. Gomes was transferred to Goa for his retired life.
Meanwhile, the principal of St Edmund’s College, Sylvanus Lamare condoled his death
“ With his passing away, the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Khasi Community has lost “a legend, a man for the poor, a guide to those in need, a counsellor and above all a benefactor to the needy”, Lamare said
