GUWAHATI: Additional charges under the National Security Act (NSA) have been slapped by Assam Police against the leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS), Akhil Gogoi who was arrested last week on charges of threatening to wage war against the state from his Golaghat residence by police from Dibrugarh.

He was re-arrested by police from Nagoan district today from Dibrugarh in presence of a magistrate from Nagaon district under the NSA.  As many as 12 cases have been registered against Gogoi out of which four cases have been registered in Nagaon, four in Lakhimpur, one each in Golaghat, Guwahati, Dhemaji and Dibrugarh.

Gogoi was first arrested last week in connection with a case registered in Sonari Police Station in Dibrugarh district. He allegedly threatened to take up arms to protect the rights of indigenous people in Assam in view of the BJP-led NDA government’s attempt to grant citizenship to Hindu refugees from Bangladesh.

There have been raging protests in various parts of the state demanding unconditional release of Gogoi. However, notwithstanding the protests the government has decided to slap fresh cases against Gogoi under the NSA.
