SHILLONG: The Missing Squad and the Anti Human Trafficking Unit of East Khasi Hills and Assam police in a joint operation rescued a woman from her captors in Siliguri after almost eight months since she had gone missing from Guwahati.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem said the 24-year-old woman identified as Lamidaka Rymbai and a resident of Jowai, had gone missing under mysterious circumstances on February 2 this year.
Rymbai was working as a nursing intern at GNRC Hospital in Guwahati and staying as a paying guest in the Super Market area, which is about 50 metres from the hospital.
Syiem said the woman went missing without anybody having any information on her whereabouts.
Later, an FIR was filed by Jemina Rymbai about her daughter’s disappearance at Dispur police station. She thereafter filed a missing report at Lumdiengjri police station.
The Missing Squad of the East Khasi Hills District Police pursued the case, notwithstanding the fact that the woman went missing from Guwahati and later apprehended one Nur Muhammad of Sonatary village under Tarabari police station in Barpeta with the assistance of Boko police.
Muhammad was found to have been involved in the disappearance of the missing person.
It was also gathered that he was the last person to have met her and was in possession of some of her belongings. He admitted to have abandoned her at Hajo after crossing Saraighat Bridge.
Guwahati city police thereafter registered a regular case and arrested the accused, but the investigation could not make further progress.
The Missing Desk East Khasi Hills continued to pursue the matter and gathered information that she had been trafficked to West Bengal.
The Missing Squad and the Anti Human Trafficking Unit, East Khasi Hills followed up the matter, and based on a tip-off that she was trafficked to Siliguri, left for the town along with a team of the Assam Police last week.
The joint team was able to rescue Rymbai from Khalpara Siliguri where she was kept under confinement.
After her rescue, she was united with her parents who had accompanied the police team.
Her captors however managed to give the slip when the raid was conducted in the area.
“Investigation is still on to identify the traffickers and the circumstances of her being kidnapped,” Syiem said.
