SHILLONG: Travelling on Guwahati- Shillong road is definitely a joyride with scenic pictures and four-lane roads but the road is still bumpy and risky in many stretches.
Travelling on the road reveals that the PWD roads from Mawlai till Umiam junction has potholes on many places which have become bigger and threatening due to continuous rain for the past 5-6 months.
After reaching Umiam, the luxurious four-lane welcomes every traveler on the road but here too, vehicle have to ply on an uneven and bumpy road at Umsning.
The existing Umsning road which is around 5-kilometer-long, is full of potholes and existing road condition does pose a great risk for a major accident in the area.
On Thursday, it was seen that a truck remained in broke down condition along the stretch since morning and the truck was still being repaired on the road till evening. Thankfully, few traffic cops were deployed near the truck to regulate the traffic.
However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) recently told Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Dorbar Shnong Umsning area that the existing road at Umsning would be “fully” blacktopped in October this year.
Earlier, even Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma had asked the NHAI to expedite the overlay of Umsning Road
Meanwhile, landslides and water logging on the National Highway is still evident.
On Thursday, it was seen that pieces of muds were falling down from some of the slopes during a heavy rainfall in area between Nongpoh and Umsning.
Though, no major landslides have been reported in the highway for the past 2-3 year following various measures taken by the NHAI, but still situation demands more preventive measures to avoid a disaster.
On the other hand, it was also visible that mud water flows right through the road when it rains heavily in the area.
