TURA: Incessant rain could not dampen the spirits of Durga Puja revelers in Tura who came out in thousands on Saturday to take part in Durag idol immersion procession and thereafter in the immersion ceremony at Babupara Bisharjan Ghat of the town.
Although the immersion procession was delayed due to bad weather, it eventually began from the Tura Parade Ground where the idols of all 24 Puja Pandals were taken for their final journey to immersion. Due to incessant rains during the last few days, landslides and snapping of power lines occurred at many different places of the town.
Security was also beefed up by the West Garo Hills District Administration. Other than rain playing the spoilsport, there was no untoward incident reported from any part of the district.
This year’s Durga Puja celebration coincided with the Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Beldarpara Puja Pandal and the Milan Sangha Puja Pandal respectively.
In other parts of Garo Hills, immersion of idols took place at different times as per the convenience of the Puja Pandal concerned. This year, there were around 110 Puja pandals in the entire Garo Hills.
The efforts of the Central Puja Committee (CPC) of Garo Hills, the apex coordinating body of Puja Pandals and Hindu religious institutions also helped to ensure the smooth and peaceful celebration of the festival.
As part of the festivities, a Dhak competition cum cultural programme was organised by the CPC on Sunday at the Tura Parade Ground.
