Lightning strike kills woman
SHILLONG: A 23-year-old pregnant woman, Pyndapjingkmen Pariong of Dommawlieh village, died in a lightning strike at Umbyrthih village in West Khasi Hills in the afternoon of September 27. Meanwhile, Prius Shabong, 42, succumbed to his injuries at Tirot Singh Syiem Memorial Hospital, Mairang after the Jeep driven by him had an accident at Mairang in West Khasi Hills around 6.30 pm on Thursday. In another incident, Jatham Basaiawmoit, the driver of a Jeep (ML-05-5528) was injured after a tree fell on the vehicle at 4th Mile in Upper Shillong on Friday. He was admitted to Civil Hospital here.
Body of mentally challenged woman found in SWKH
MAWKYRWAT: The body of a mentally unstable woman was recovered from Tynrong Mawshamphai forest under Mawlangwir area in South West Khasi Hills district on Sunday morning.South West Khasi Hills SP Herbert G Lyngdoh said the woman was identified as Kedoris Kharlyngdoh (25) of Nonglang village near Mawkyrwat. A few villagers recovered her body around 10.30 am.Lyngdoh said preliminary inquiry showed no injury marks on the deceased woman’s body and the relatives did not suspect any foul play and therefore requested for postmortem exemption. The body was handed over to the relatives.According to villagers, the woman went missing from home on September 29 and it was suspected that she might have died due to cold because of the heavy rainfall since last Friday.
Seminar on Intl Translation Day
SHILLONG: As part of the International Translation Day celebration, the Sahitya Akademi, in association with the English Department of North-Eastern Hills University (NEHU), held a one-day national seminar at the Old Guest House Auditorium, NEHU, Shillong Campus on September 30. The event saw the participation of playwrights, actors and scholars from across the country as well as academicians and students from the state. The seminar opened with an inaugural session at 10 am, followed by two presentation sessions and concluding with a panel discussion which ended at 5:30 pm. Several issues relevant to the translation of Indian drama into English and into Indian languages were discussed.
High footfall at Air Fest despite rain
SHILLONG: Hundreds of enthusiastic citizens dreaded the rain and visited the annual Air Fest at the Shillong ALG on Saturday. It was part of the Air Force Day celebrations. The major attraction at the ALG was Mi-17 and the ALH helicopters on display, a statement by the Eastern Air Command said. Another area that was a crowd-puller was the stall set up by the GARUD commandos of the Indian Air Force, wherein their special weapons and equipment were on display. There were performances by the Air Force Band and the Air Warrior Drill Team. The Air Devils enthralled the spectators by carrying out a scintillating display of aerial manoeuvring and perfect landing by each member of the team. Though Saturday was a full dress rehearsal, the flypast could not go through due to inclement weather.
