TURA: A senior GNLA rebel, who survived two recent security raids, has been arrested in South Garo Hills.
Bande Ch. Marak alias Border from Telikali in the district was arrested from Dosogre in Baghmara during a raid by police commandos from the special force unit (SF-10) late on Thursday night.
Bande joined the rebel outfit in 2012. He told police that he was part of the fourth batch of recruits but failed to complete the training.
The militant also said he was part of the group of cadres who accompanied GNLA chief Sohan D Shira to different parts of Garo Hills providing their leader with security cover for the past two years.
Though Bande survived two recent police raids on GNLA hideouts in the forests of South Garo Hills two months ago, he lost contact with other members of the outfit. So he took shelter among civilians in the village when police caught him.
He was arrested unarmed.
The rebel has confessed to police that he was with Sohan during two ambushes on police personnel at Kolapara and Panda reserve forests a few years ago in which several policemen were killed.
