GUWAHATI: The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) here on Friday awarded three-month jail term
and imposed fine of Rs 5000 on Assamese singer and filmmaker Zubeen Garg on charges of slapping the
teenaged son of a prominent lawyer in the city way back in June 2013.
The singer’s counsel Joonmoni Devi Khaund informed that the court framed charges under IPC Sections
323, 341 and 506 against the singer and absolved him of charge under Section 341, but handed out three-
month jail term each under Sections 323 and 506 which will run concurrently. The court also imposed a
fine of Rs 5000 on the singer. The singer has now one-month time to appeal against the CJM court
verdict in higher court.
Talking to the media following Friday’s court verdict, Zubeen Garg said he respected the verdict of the
court and would appeal against it in the High Court. He said it was an old case from 2013 which should
get settled without much more delay.
The singer had slapped the teenaged son of Advocate Arup Borbora in the city way back in June 29, 2013
as he objected to the young boy smoking before him. The singer then went on record before media stating
that he had slapped the young boy as was offended to find the lad smoking before him.
The advocate father of the boy then lodged a complaint against the singer at Geetanagar Police Station
