SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday declared a former Congress block unit president as its candidate from Mawryngkneng constituency.
Around 3,500 people attended the function where UDP state president Donkupar Roy declared the name of Pynehborlang Mukhim, who was the president of Mawryngkneng Block Congress Committee.
Addressing the gathering, Roy said, “Starting from today, everyone needs to work hard to make sure that your candidate becomes victorious in the upcoming election.”
The UDP chief slammed the newly formed People’s Democratic Front terming them as a party of deserters that took birth from the Congress and most of its members are leaders from the Congress, UDP, HSPDP and KHNAM.
Asserting that PDF is misleading the public by saying they would bring about change in the state, Roy said it’s not easy for leaders who deserted one party and joined another to form a new party to make such claims.
Roy said the UDP-HSPDP alliance would unite the indigenous populace in the state.
UDP MLA from West Shillong Paul Lyngdoh too ttacked the Congress saying the national party was using “terror tactics” to win the 2018 elections from his constituency. Stressing on the party’s commitment to development, Lyngdoh said, “UDP does not only stand for United Democratic Party but also for Unity, Development and Peace.”
Reiterating Roy’s remark, Lyngdoh said with allusion to PDF that many parties are claiming to be in the seat of power but “they are small and were created after separation from parties like the Congress, UDP and others”.
