SHILLONG: NPP leader and Tura MP Conrad Sangma said on Saturday that there was tremendous response from people and leaders to the party in the run-up to the upcoming Assembly polls.
Speaking over phone, Sangma said he was thankful to the people as they see NPP as an alternative to the ruling Congress.
When asked about his sister and former Tura MP, Agatha Sangma, who had applied for NPP ticket to contest South Tura constituency, Conrad said the election committee will take a final decision.
The party had already called for applications from ticket aspirants both in Garo and Khasi Hills.
NPP has decided to go it alone in the 2018 Assembly polls though it is part of both the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and the North East Democratic Alliance.
With this new approach, the party hopes to open account in Khasi-Jaintia and Ri Bhoi seats.
Many Congress legislators have decided to join NPP as they consider that compared to other political parties, NPP can make a difference since it has significant presence in Garo Hills.
Those from the Congress who will join NPP include former deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh, erstwhile Congress leaders, Prestone Tynsong, Sniawbhalang Dhar and his brother Ngaitlang Dhar.
