SHILLONG: Six months old regional party, People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has formed the People’s Democratic Front Zonal Committee, Nartiang Constituency and decided to field Draison Kharshiing as their candidate for the Assembly elections.

In his speech, the former MLA (2003-2008) from the Nartiang constituency and three- time MDC (1989-1994, 1994-1999, 1999-2004) from Moobakhon-Khanduli Constituency assured the electorate that half of his salary would be donated to the public and for uplift of society if the people voted for him as MLA.

“I have no doubt that I will come back as an MLA from 1-Nartiang Constituency and I know that the people will support me in order to usher in a change in the society,” he said.

Braving the rain, Kharshiing along with a thousand-strong supporters gathered at Sohphoh village to join the party. Crowds who came to attend the meeting sheltered themselves from the rain by sitting inside vehicles, resting sheds, schools and houses.

Ivanlumlang Marbaniang, president of PDF expressed happiness that the party has been able to sow its seed in Jaintia Hills and stated that the party stood for rights of indigenous people of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.

Kharshiing is set for a face-off with sitting Congress MLA Sniawbhalang Dhar who has been rumoured to join the National People’s Party (NPP).
