SHILLONG: NCP has projected itself as an alternative to Congress and BJP in the run up to the Assembly polls in the state.
Addressing the NCP convention held at Tura on Saturday, leaders of the party urged people to opt for NCP.
NCP vice-president, Vijay Raj said the party would come to power on its own in the upcoming elections.
Special invitees and Independent legislators, Saleng A Sangma and John Leslie K. Sangma, said the state was still reeling under financial crisis and unemployment problems among others.
Highlighting the varied problems affecting the people of the state, the legislators said NCP was the only secular party who could make an impact and bring good governance to the state.
Saleng also said people know what had been done by the Congress in Meghalaya and by the BJP at the Centre as both have failed to deliver.
In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, Saleng said the national general secretary and in-charge of Northeast, Praful Patel did not attend the meeting as his chopper could not land in Tura because of inclement weather. Another NCP leader, Narendra Verma, in-charge of Northeast, was also with Patel.
The NCP statement said many people, who gathered at the convention venue could not be accommodated because of rain and hence they returned.
Among the leaders who were present in the meeting include general secretary of state NCP and former MLA, Desang M. Sangma, NCP MDC from GHADC, Righteous N Sangma, president, Nationalist Youth Congress, Meghalaya, Torang R. Marak and as many as 15 aspiring candidates.
