SHILLONG: Calling Meghalaya as one of the poorest states in India, Union Minister of State for Tourism, Alphons Kannanthanam has urged the people of the state to stop ruling politicians from robbing the people anymore by ousting them from power in the 2018 Assembly elections.

Commenting on Meghalaya’s scenario, he told the crowd at a public meeting in Sohra on Thursday, “Meghalaya is one of the poorest states in India. The people are in poverty by and large, why is that happening?”

Alphons alleged that the Chief Minister, ministers, MLAs, politicians are stealing people’s money. He went on, “This election is your great opportunity, my dear people, stop this robbery, throw the Chief Minister, throw out the Ministers, throw out the MLAs and bring honest people to power.”

Referring to the Congress, he said, “The party which was ruling India was stealing the people’s money,” as he narrated the reason why he chose to enter BJP.

“We will bring an honest government in Meghalaya who will work for you,” he added.

Having been slammed by the Congress for anti-Christian tag of the BJP, Alphons said, “We shall continue to protect Christians and therefore please vote for the BJP.”

Alphons stated that under the Congress rule only 3 km of road was constructed per day whereas under the present BJP government, 23 km of road is being constructed per day, adding that under the PMGSY, 130 km of road is also being constructed.

Later, speaking to reporters, he said that the congress had completely cheated the people of Meghalaya and there had to be a change of government.

It was the first visit of the Union Minister to the quaint village of Sohra and he pointed out the immense tourism potential of the area.

“Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful places on earth and it has got immense potential for tourism, few come here because there is no basic infrastructure. All this can be created if there is an honest government which is committed to the welfare of the people,” he said.
