SHILLONG: The 20th Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) Students’ National Convention concluded on Sunday. The two-day event witnessed a series lectures on technology by professors from across the country.
One of the speakers, Prof Gautam Baruah, Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati, said machine learning is mainly adopted in the West where there is a shortage of manpower.
“But in a country like India where so many are looking for jobs, our priority should be based on the environmental needs and we have to think about how we can use technology to transform our society and our students can contribute a lot in this direction.”
Addressing a huge gathering of engineering students from different parts of the country, Baruah said VLSI (Very-Large-Scale Integration) devices such as mobile phones have brought revolution in the communication technology while delivering a talk on ‘Technological Transformation: A Futuristic Approach’.
“Technology can enable efficient regulation of various components of a city, such as road, electricity, transport, water supply etc. The concept of ‘smart city’ too is mostly dependent on technological efficiency,” he added.
Other attractions of the event were robotics football competition, quiz, model presentation, paper presentation on the theme ‘Technological transformation: a futuristic approach’, posters competition, circuit design competition, build-o-mania competition for Civil Engineering students and many other.Cotton University received the first prize in quiz completion, IITG received the second prize. In model presentation competition, RIST got the first prize and USTM received the second prize; in robo football and Buil-o-Mania, Assam Engineering College received the first prize.
