SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) has urged the state government to set up a government college in East Jaintia Hills.
JSM president L Rymbai and its general secretary D Siangshai met Ram Singh, Director of Higher and Technical Education, at his office chamber recently and submitted a letter seeking information about the status of the memorandum that the group submitted to the government in January.
Rymbai said in the memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the students’ body has demanded setting up of a government college in East Jaintia Hills district as the students have to go all the way to Jowai for attending classes in Kiang Nangbah Government College.
Rymbai also urged the government to implement residential schools in three community and rural development blocks in West Jaintia Hills, engineering college at Thadmuthlong and Pine Mount International School at Wahiajer, both in West Jaintia Hills.
The JSM president said locals have willingly donated land for educational institutions but till date the government is taking no step to start construction.
Singh assured JSM that he would take up the matter with the government so that their demands can be looked into at the earliest.
