RTI activist seeks action against ‘illegal’ headmen
SHILLONG: RTI activist Disparsing Rani has urged the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to file FIRs against self-styled traditional headmen who are “illegally” operating under their jurisdiction without obtaining ‘sanad’ (appointment). Quoting an RTI information, Rani told reporters at a press conference in the city on Monday that headmen from 37 villages falling under 17 Raid in Ri Bhoi are yet to obtain sanad from the Syiem. The RTI activist also said he would soon meet the Syiem of Hima Mylliem with a request to file police complaint against the headmen. The RTI was filed with the Syiem of Hima Mylliem. He also pointed out that the High Court in its order passed on August 27 earlier this year had clearly stated that a headman should get sanad from the Syiem of Hima Mylliem after being elected by the people of a particular village. On the other hand, Rani also alleged that most of the headmen are violating the provisions laid down in the sanad, especially with regards to land issues.
One dies in accident
SHILLONG: One person died and many others were injured in a series of road accidents in the state. On October 29, one Maruti A-Star (AS-01AM-6768) knocked down two pedestrians at Sumer Umbang in Ri Bhoi. As a result, Lamboklang Mawlong died on the spot while another sustained injuries.
Bike expedition flagged off
SHILLONG: A tri-nation motorcycle expedition by Assam Rifles was flagged off on Monday by Governor Ganga Prasad. The expedition is being held to commemorate the 142nd birthday celebration of the first deputy prime minister of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Tuesday. The 2,150-km ‘Unity and Heritage Motorcycle Expedition’ will cover two neighboring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar and six Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. The expedition is aimed to increase force to force bonhomie between the Border Guarding Forces of Bangladesh, Myanmar and India. The participants will pay homage at various war memorials and graves of soldiers on the foreign soil. They will also participat in cultural events that aims to increase the interaction between the border guards of the three nations.
PDF holds meeting at Riangdo
NONGSTOIÑ: Thousands of people from Mawshynrut Constituency attended a meeting on Monday held by People’s Democratic Party (PDF) at Riangdo football playground, West Khasi Hills. The people wanted to show their support for the MDC of Mawshynrut who will also contest from PDF in the upcoming MLA election 2018. New office bearers of PDF Mawshynrut zonal committee was also appointed on Monday which included the parent body, youth wing zonal committee, women’s wing zonal committee. Members of the central body including the PDF president Ivanlumlang Marbaniang, general secretary Auspicious Lyngdoh were present.
Trekking cum caving expedition
SHILLONG: The Youth Hostels association of India, Meghalaya branch will organise the 2nd Meghalaya trekking cum caving expedition. In this connection, the first batch of trekkers will start on October 31 from Youth Hostel Shillong at 8 am. Deputy Commissioner EKH PS Dkhar, will flag off the trekking. Participants from different parts of the countrywill be taking part in the trek.
Devkota remembered
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Nepali Sahitya Sammelan celebrated the 109th birth anniversary of Poet Laureate Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota at Babu Manisingh Gurung auditorium on October 29. The function started with lighting of lamp followed by floral tributes to the late poet. Imminent poets like Paul Lyngdoh, Prof. Streamlet Dkhar, MinimonLaloo, Rita Ghosh, Sushmita Das, Prof Jean Dkhar, Manju Lama, among others enthralled the audiences with their self – composed poems. Later, the poets and artists were presented with momentos.
Free cataract operation
SHILLONG: A free eye camp for 30 villages lying in and around Dongkiingding village in West Khasi Hills district was conducted on October 26 by Netralaya Mission Shillong under the leadership of Dr. A. Deka. The camp was facilitated by St. Joseph’s Agricultural Training Centre-RRTC Umran. 120 people suffering from various eye problem underwent eye check- up and were provided with medicine and spectacles while 15 were short listed for free cataract operation. Dr. A. Deka also successfully operated 6 cataract patients on October 27. The patients hailing from interior villages thanked the state Health Department for introducing MHIS and helping them get free eye care.
Stress laid on school safety plan
NONGSTOIN: The District Disaster Management Authority, (DDMA), West Khasi Hills observed the National Day for Disaster Reduction with the theme ‘Disaster preparedness is everyone’s responsibility’ on Monday. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Kumari B Ranee, MCS, Extra Assistant Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District stressed on the importance of having a school safety plan and regular conduct of mock drills which would ensure protection to school students from any eventuality. She also highlighted the need for active involvement of all stakeholders to engage themselves and others in disaster management.
