SHILLONG: Political parties and social activists here have welcomed the High Court of Meghalaya’s directive of a CBI probe into the criminal aspect of the education scam pending against politicians.
BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh, while appreciating Thursday’s verdict of the division bench of the court, said “Now all those involved in the scam can be brought to book. The people, including the minister who was involved in the scam should be punished according to the law.”
UDP leader Allan Dkhar said by going into the details of how manipulations were effected, this is a very sad episode in the education scenario of the state.
“We are hopeful that the CBI inquiry will be carried out in a speedy manner so as to bring logical end to the matter and after the final judgment, all those who were covering up all along will definitely face the law, Dkhar added.
Relieved at the court order, social activist Agnes Kharshiing who was following up the case by filing a writ petition said, “Finally there is justice for the common man. It has been a long drawn battle.”
She hoped that things would open up now. “People who are not privileged will also get a chance to compete in the government recruitment,” Kharshiing, who is the president of the Civil Society Women’s Organisation, said.
“This is also a lesson for others that they should not take the patronage of their representatives,” she said.
According to Kharshiing, the case in Laitumkhrah police station was registered based on an FIR filed by one of the candidates. “But it was kept in cold storage,” she said.
“After the earlier CBI report, I and Angela Rangad filed another FIR into the matter,” Kharshiing said.
