HYC condemns those involved in education scam
SHILLONG: The HYC Central Committee (Education cell) has condemned those who were involved in the education scam of 2010. In a statement on Tuesday, the HYC said that according to the CBI report as many as 5 persons including ministers, MLAs , MDCs along with the government officers were part of the scam. The council also condemned the former education minister Ampareen Lyngdoh who was in charge of the department in 2010. HYC said that the minister misused her authority and asked the officers of the education department to use white ink in the score sheets of some candidates who were close to them so that they will get the job. It further added that the government had spent a lot of money to conduct examinations and interviews, and asserted that the politicians named in the CBI inquiry should step down. The HYC also said that the government should choose new LP school teachers in the state, while it urged the people that they should choose their representatives wisely.
Magistrate clarifies on Champion trial
SHILLONG: Additional Deputy Commissioner, Baghmara A M Sangma has informed that while he was dealing only with the bail matter related to GNLA chairman Champion Sangma, the trial was handled by another magistrate A.C.Marak. He clarified that the fine of Rs 10,000 was not imposed on him, but on Marak for the delay in completing the trial pending in Baghmara court. Sangma and Marak had appeared before the High Court on Monday.
ABVP protests communal violence in Kerala
SHILLONG: ABVP, Meghalaya unit will take part in the Chalo Kerala demonstration scheduled on November 11 against the attack on innocent people by the supporters of the ruling communist party. Around 60,000 students from all over the country will gather to protest against the communal violence. From Meghalaya, as many as 60 students left for Kerala on Tuesday to participate in the movement and show solidarity. Vikash Gupta, Ward Commissioner of Shillong Cantonment Board supported the initiative.
GSU leader in South Garo Hills dares MLA to sue him
SHILLONG: Greneth M Sangma, president of GSU’s Mindikgre unit in South Garo Hills, has refused to accept the conditions put forward by independent legislator Samuel Sangma in a legal notice stating that there was no specification on what type of posts were uploaded on Facebook. In a statement addressed to Samuel’s lawyer N Gurung on Tuesday, Greneth said the charges levelled against him were baseless and that the leader was at liberty to sue him. He also said he was a social activist and works for the uplift of the poor and create awareness using RTI as a tool. Samuel on Monday had sent Greneth legal notice for spreading false reports on social media. The legislator has demanded unconditional apology and publication of the same in newspapers within three days failing which he would file a defamation case. “Since the allegation made in your notice did not specify what type and nature of article was uploaded by me against your client, I am not inclining to accept the condition put forward by you in your notice,” Greneth said and added that Samuel was at liberty to sue the activist but “at your own risk and peril”.
SDRC reviews progress of projects in NGH
TURA: The State Development Reforms Commission reviewed the implementation of various development projects under central and state sponsored schemes in North Garo Hills on Monday. The commission led by co-chairman S. R Marak and other members in this regard held a meeting with deputy commissioner, S. C Sadhu and district officials at Circuit House in Resubelpara. During the meeting, the SDRC members informed that the objective of the commission was to act as a watchdog and examine the progress of the development projects and sort out any hindrances if any, for successful implementation. Issues pertaining to district offices, including district social welfare officer, district child protection unit, special juvenile police unit, executive engineer, PHE, district horticulture officer, medical and health officer and executive engineer, PWD (roads), were also discussed.

Karbi, Khasi Wangala troupes to be part of GH festival
TURA: Troupes from Assam’s Karbi Anglong district and Khasi Hills will perform alongside dancers from Garo Hills in this year’s 100 Drums Wangala Festival that will begin on Thursday. The grand finale of the 40th celebration of the 100 Drums Wangala Festival at Asananggre, 17 km from Tura, will be on Saturday. Union Minister of State for Tourism KJ Alphons is likely to attend the festival on the second day. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will be the chief guest on the final day when the 10 Wangala troupes will perform. This is the first time a Wangala troupe from Karbi Anglong is taking part in the festival. However, the Wangala troupe from neighbouring Bangladesh will not be able to make it to the festival once again. The troupe was unable to make it to festival for the last two years due to various constraints. The three-day event will also feature indigenous games beginning on Wednesday, a handloom and handicrafts exhibition, and felicitation of martial arts winners and former chairman of 100 Drums Wangala Festival, Leander K Marak.
Nat’l legal awareness this week
SHILLONG/TURA: A nationwide public awareness campaign launched by the National Legal Services Authority will be held from November 9-18. ‘Connecting to Serve’ aims to make people aware of the various functions and activities of the Legal Services Authorities and availability of free legal aid. During this campaign, all the state and district legal services authorities will embark on a series of activities, including a door-to-door programme where para legal volunteers and panel lawyers as well as law students will distribute pamphlets and visit people at their homes to inform them about the benefits of legal services. Besides, there will be special legal assistance desks at courts at district and sub-division levels to cater to the query and assistance of those who will visit these centres. Tura District and Session Judge cum Chairman, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), A M Ripnar held an emergent meeting on Tuesday at his office chamber in view of campaign. DLSA, Tura will also observe Children’s Day in collaboration with District Child Protection Officer at Sanchongre Orphanage Centre near Tura on November 14.
Amur Falcon Fest on Nov 10-11
SHILLONG: The number of Amur Falcons migrating to Ri Bhoi’s Tyrso and other villages has increased to over a million this year, the local wildlife protection society has said. Alos Nongpoh, secretary of Tyrso Valley Wildlife Protection Society (TVWPS) while announcing the date of the third edition of Amur Falcon Festival on Tuesday, said, “The Amur Falcon birds have arrived in Tyrso village two weeks ago. We have informed the villagers not to disturb the birds.” The festival that celebrates the migration of the raptors from Siberia to the village will be held on November 10 and 11. “This year over a million of the Amur Falcon birds have arrived which is more than the number last year,” said Nongpoh. The location of the festival is quite far from where the birds stay so as not to disturb the avians. It will be held on the banks of the Umiam river in Ri Bhoi. On the inflow of tourists during the festival, Nongpoh informed that in 2015-16, over 150 tourists came. To make the journey comfortable, a 9 km road has been constructed sanctioned at a cost of Rs 5 crore last year. A bridge has also been constructed.
Medical workshop conducted
Shillong: The Emergency Medicine and Learning center (EMLC) of GVK EMRI, Meghalaya in Collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, American Academy of Family Physician and Bethany Hospital organized a two days Advance life support in Obstetrics workshop (ALSO) on November 6-7 at the conference hall of Bethany Hospital Shillong. 35 medical officers, senior medical officers and staff nurses from East, West and South Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, East and West Jaintia Hills including staff nurses of Bethany Hospital, Shillong and Nongpoh, participated in the training.
RTI workshop organised
SHILLONG: A workshop on Right to Information Act, 2005 and Rules 2012 was held in DGP office here on Tuesday. Public information officers of all districts and police units, including senior police officers and officials of home, police and political department, took part in the workshop. In his keynote address, director general of police S. B Singh, highlighted the importance of Right to Information Act and exhorted participants to follow the RTI Act and Rules and furnish correct information to the applicants within prescribed time.
Inter school competition held
SHILLONG: 12 schools participated at the inter school science exhibition programme which was recently held at Pedaldoba Secondary School compound in West Garo Hills in aegis with Science Club, AIGU, Pedaldoba with an aim to enhance the talents of school children. St Michael Secondary School bagged the first prize in science exhibition, essay, debate, quiz, dance and national anthem singing competition while the skit competition was bagged by Pedaldoba Girls secondary school.

SHILLONG: One Rainitha G. Momin, alias Nosila, wife of Clement Ch. Marak of Kosak Gandim Chotcholja is reported missing since November 2 and a case has been registered under Kharkutta PS, North Garo Hills in this regard. The missing person is 38 years and is 5ft with fair complexion and long hair. She was last seen wearing a pink salwar.
