Govt yet to cancel teachers’ appointment

SHILLONG: A week after the order of the High Court of Meghalaya to cancel the appointment of teachers following the education scam, the state government is still undecided that may amount to contempt of court.
The High Court had on November 2 ordered cancellation of the entire process of appointment of teachers made in 2010 due to large scale manipulations and ordered CBI inquiry against those who were involved in the scam, while widening the investigation into the remaining centers where the tests were conducted for the appointment of teachers.
When contacted on the plan of the government, a state government source said on Wednesday that the education department was still examining the order and the file was yet to reach the higher authorities.
The source also added that the matter will have to be discussed with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma before taking any final decision.
The critics of the government have pointed that since the Assembly polls are round the corner, the government is taking time to decide on the matter as the opponents will use the issue in the elections.
However, a legal expert said there was no question of further scrutiny and discussion on the matter as the order would have to be abided by the government.
The expert added that there was no point in appealing before the Supreme Court as it was the Apex Court which had asked the
High Court to dispose of the matter.
Moreover, the scope for review for the modification of the 105-page order of the High Court is limited since the judgment was based on the reports of the government-appointed High Level Scrutiny Committee and the CBI which had segregated the tainted and non-tainted teachers.
However, there are grievances from the non-tainted teachers as they were affected in the process and now they will have to appear for fresh examination after serving for seven years.
