SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday demanded that all government offices, resorts and shops should use ‘Sohra’ instead of ‘Cherrapunjee’.
A KSU delegation met East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar a day after six of its members were detained for spraying black paint on signboards at Sohra post office for using the new name.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ostarnic Marbaniang, KSU’s assistant publicity secretary in charge of South Khasi Hills, said the union had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Sohra sub-divisional officer on the matter and a notification was released on May 26 directing all heads of Sohra civil sub-division to make necessary changes in their signboards, letter heads and all official correspondences.
“The DC in our meeting had assured us that the matter will be taken up seriously,” he said.
In connection to the arrests, Marbaniang said the members have been released and the FIR filed by the post master has been withdrawn.
The union further urged business establishments to change the name from ‘Cherrapunjee’ to ‘Sohra’.
