GUWAHATI: A heliport will be constructed at Karimganj in South Assam with facility for landing of four choppers at the same time while three bridges will be built on Barak River to improve the surface communication.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this while inaugurating Namami Barak Festival at Silchar on Saturday. He also announced that an international standard skill development centre and a stadium will also be constructed in the area in days to come.
The three-day Namami Barak Festival which got underway on Saturday will be graced by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind as the chief guest on the concluding on November 20.
The government has declared a local holiday on November 20 in all the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi in South Assam on the occasion of the valedictory function of Barak river worshipping festival that has been organised to show case potential of the river and the heritage of South Assam through which the British rulers entered Northeast from Sylhet now in Bangladesh.
The government has also declared dry days during November 18-20 in the entire Barak Valley in South Assam area on the occasion of the festival.
