TURA: Organisations from Garo Hills have voiced their anger over the claim made by an official of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that over 15% of the population had enrolled for Aadhar in Meghalaya, a report of which was published in the media on Tuesday.
Organisations which included the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), GSU, FKJGP and AYWO on Wednesday said that the claim was shameful and termed it as an attempt to project its Aadhar coverage in the state through the media.
“The UIDAI is using the media to convince the people to opt for Aadhar by claiming that 5,09,964 people (15% of the population) have enrolled for Aadhar. The UIDAI acts ignorant of our democratic resistance to the Aadhar project. Also, the matter is subjudice as the Supreme Court hearing on the controversial issue is not due till the last week of November. Does the UIDAI know that the imposition of Aadhaar before the Supreme Court ruling is against the judicial spirit of the Constitution of the nation?” the organizations said.
The organisations stated that no authority or agency is authorised to implement the same when the matter is yet to be decided in the apex court and alleged that the UIDAI was infusing fear psychosis and confusion in the minds of the people with the sole intention to trick them into enrolling.
“The UIDAI does not honour the SC and it is in haste to give everyone the Aadhar number. If they mean well, then why are they in a hurry and forcing it on the people when we have been vehemently opposing it?” they said.
The organisations also said that it was prepared to take aggressive steps of recourse in any form to stop Aadhar being forced on the people. It warned UIDAI and other likeminded agencies to desist from using force saying, the ‘computerized human number’ is not needed in Meghalaya.
