SHILLONG: The new Umsning bypass, which is an integral part of Guwahati-Shillong expressway, is likely to start from February.
Officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have informed that the road will be completed soon but it will be open for traffic only after safety audit is conducted by a third party.
The road is almost complete except for the 560-meter stretch, besides construction of a minor bridge and vehicular underpass, the officials said.
They added that the work along the new Umsning bypass was delayed due to rain.
The 62-km four-laning of NH-40 (Umiam to Jorabat) has been taken up by NHAI that is executing the work through Hyderabad-based Ramky Infrastructure Limited at a tender cost of Rs 536 crore. Once the Umsning bypass is completed, the time taken for travelling between Guwahati and Shillong will reduce further. Meanwhile, the overlay work along the existing Umsning road is 50 per cent completed and it will be completed soon as per the direction of the High Court of Meghalaya.
“We will finish the ongoing overlay work in December,” the official said.
