SHILLONG: An alert citizen foiled a burglary attempt at Shyam Jewellers in Police Bazar in the wee hours of Sunday.
Police said around 2 am, the personnel of Shillong Sadar police station were alerted by a citizen who noticed an unusual movement at the jewellery shop which prompted the police to swiftly cordon off the area.
On the arrival of the shop owner, the shutter was opened and the accused identified as Md Rafik Sheikh (36), Badus Sheikh (23) and Bisan Mondal (41), all hailing from Sahebganj in Jharkhand, were arrested while they were hiding in the toilet.
During interrogation, the accused said they arrived in Shillong two days ago and stayed in a lodge in Police Bazar and thoroughly surveyed the area near the shop. They used a small ladder to climb the roof of the shop.
The trio then cut the roof to enter the shop and pulled off all the four CCTV cameras.
The police suspect that they could be the same gang involved in cases of burglary of mobile shops in Police Bazar, Jowai, Guwahati and other areas.
