Welfare of safai karmacharis discussed

JOWAI: Member of the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis to the state of Meghalaya, Jagadish Hiremeni visited both East and West Jaintia Hills on Monday. In separate meetings with the Deputy Commissioners of both East and West Jaintia Hills, Hiremeni discussed the welfare of the Safai Karmacharis in the respective districts.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and chief executive officer Jowai Municipal Board, S.C Laloo, informed that the motive of the visit of the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis to the district was to make sure that the welfare of the Safai Karmacharis (sweepers and cleaners) is taken care of by the district in accordance with government schemes.
“The commission has instructed the district administration to conduct medical check-ups for them once in every three months, to provide health insurance under the Dr Ambedkar Foundation and to facilitate housing loan schemes as per the Karmacharis Act.
The district administration assured it would implement the welfare schemes for them.
He has also informed the grievances appraised by the municipal workers were also taken note by the Commission. According to Laloo, there are 33 employees employed as sweepers in the Jowai Municipal Board, of which, 10 were casual workers. The commission has also directed the district administration to come out with lists of all those who were working under the Karmacharis Act and the same be submitted to it.
