SHILLONG: After five years’ delay, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will lay the foundation stone of the Shillong Medical College on PPP mode at Reid Chest (TB) Hospital, Jhalupara.
On November 2, 2012, the state government had signed an agreement with KPC Medical College Hospital in Kolkata to construct the medical college cum hospital with a cost of Rs 250 crore.
The deadline of 2017 for completion was set by the government but there was no progress after signing the agreement.
The ironical decision of constructing another TB hospital at Umsawli, Mawdiangdiang, had delayed the project.
Critics had said that the medical college should have been constructed elsewhere instead of choosing the site of the current TB hospital in Jhalupara.
There was also criticism in the past from several quarters to shift TB patients to Umsawli. Since infrastructure facilities are yet to be ready at Umsawli, the patients have not been shifted.
