SHILLONG: A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Ri Bhoi on Tuesday sentenced Jopstar Kharthangmaw for four years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000.
Ri Bhoi superintendant of police Ramesh Singh said the accused was sentenced in a 2013 case under Umiam police station.
“It is an important judgment. In the efforts of the state to fight crime against children, it will deter criminals and encourage people to report child abuse to police,” Ri Bhoi superintendant of police said.
If the convict fails to pay fine, he will have to serve another two months.
The co-accused, Tynshain Kurbah, died in a road accident. The incident happened at Lawbyrwa village.
The girl was followed by the two accused, Jopstar Kharthangmaw and Tynshain Kurbah when she was coming back from the market.
According to Singh, the victim was given compensation of Rs 25,000.
