SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA from Nongthymmai, Jemino Mawthoh said that the education system in the state which is now in doldrums, had to undergo changes.
Stating that the state was once a hub of education, he said that there was a need to provide quality education in the state if the people wanted the state to regain the “education hub” tag.
He was speaking at the inauguration of new building of Laitumkhrah Assamese Secondary School which is sponsored by Asian Development Bank as part of its supporting human capital development in Meghalaya on Friday.
He urged the collaboration of people for improvement of health and education and stressed on the role of teachers who should provide good leadership to the students.
With the school getting the new infrastructure and facilities, principal secretary of education department, DP Wahlang urged the school not to increase fees with the new facilities otherwise the school authorities would be called by the officials of the department.
He pointed out that students stayed back home due to lack of infrastructure but with the scheme of ADB, it was hoped that things would improve in the schools.
To give students a better learning atmosphere with the introduction of new furniture, desks, book in the form of a small library which is also supported by digital library.
Wahlang stated that more components would be added with the starting of digital classroom with proper contents which would come in handy for teachers.
He exhorted the school to reap benefits from the new infrastructure by improving their results as he informed that impact assessment of the scheme would be done for schools.
The new building of the Laitumkhrah Assamese Secondary School is the first school to be inaugurated in Shillong and greater Shillong and the second school in the state out of 117 schools which will get benefit from the ADB funding.
The first school in the state which received benefit from the scheme was a school in Nongkrem, East Khasi Hills.
