Crop insurance scheme likely
MAWKYRWAT: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo said on Friday the government would soon come up with a crop insurance scheme for farmers affected by calamities. Addressing a gathering on the concluding day of the two-day exhibition and crop competition here, Laloo lauded the efforts of the Agriculture Department in organising the programme that would benefit primary producers and provide a platform for farmers to showcase their produce and share ideas. “This programme will bring in competitive spirit among the farmers and will encourage others to take up agriculture as a source of livelihood and not to depend on government jobs,” she said. More than 170 farmers participated in the exhibition that was held under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture.

Soil health card distributed
NONGPOH: Soil health cards were distributed to a group of farmers in Umling C&RD block at a programme organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Jorhat in collaboration with the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority to mark World Soil Day. A soil health card application video was also presented to sensitise farmers on the availability of week field level application.

25 yrs on, Baghmara college still lacks infra, manpower
TURA: Captain Williamson Memorial College in Baghmara continues to face infrastructure and manpower crises even after it was provincialised in 2011. The college in South Garo Hills was established in 1992 and celebrated its silver jubilee on Friday. It functioned temporarily until 1999 when it first received grant from the government. The institute was the outcome of the efforts of former Meghalaya minister Lotsing A Sangma, then deputy commissioner of the district PS Thangkhiew, BDO J D Sangma and other elderly citizens. Speaking on the occasion, GHADC CEM Boston Ch Marak assured full support to the college. Earlier, the chief guest also released the Jubilee Souvenir and also felicitated the first governing body of the college. The silver jubilee celebration also saw the participation of GHADC deputy CEM Wenison Ch Marak, Director of Higher and Technical Education (Retd), J D Marak and other district officials.
