TURA: East Garo Hills District administration in collaboration with the Tourism Department organised a one-day orientation programme on career guidance in tourism for the surrendered cadres of the militant organisations of Garo Hills at Williamnagar Circuit House on Monday.
Speaking during the programme, Deputy Commissioner, Ram Kumar informed that the objective of the programme was to provide livelihood opportunities through tourism that can be taken up by the surrendered cadres and also to get them involved in tourism based livelihood activities. He also urged the youth who are still in the jungles to come out and join the mainstream as there are multiple avenues and rehabilitation packages available for them.
Stressing on the need to promote eco-tourism in the right perspective in order to ensure more tourist inflow into the region, Ram Kumar said that employment opportunities should be provided through eco-tourism thereby enabling the youth to find jobs not only in the region but even outside the state. He also assured the support of the district administration to the surrendered cadres to guide them in joining the mainstream.
On the occasion, presentations on Manas Wild Life Sanctuary, Garo Hills as Tourist Destination and Tourism for Livelihood Improvement were given by East Garo Hills Tourist Officer, Bulbully S Marak, President of the A’chik Tourism Society, Dipu N Marak, and Director of Western Region MBDA, Daniel J Ingty respectively.
